Conabio was created in 1992 to:
- promote and coordinate knowledge, conservation and sustainable
use of biodiversity of Mexico
- maintain the National Biodiversity Information System (SNIB)
updated
- provide biodiversity information to Government and Society.
Most of its budget has been directed to support studies and projects
related with biological inventories and databases for the construction
of SNIB. With this budget, CONABIO has computerized the main Mexican
zoological collections and herbaria. Specifically, at this moment the
database for vascular plants includes 836,600 specimens from herbaria
and museums in Mexico (57 collections) and abroad (87 collections).
The information repatriation process of Mexican specimens began with the
record of specimen label in a database. In the last three years, Conabio
has digitized images of specimens held in international herbaria and has
included it in its database.
