Vera Lucia Imperatriz-Fonseca received his B.S. in Biological Sciences (1968), Masters degree (1970) and Ph.D degree from the São Paulo University (USP). Ecology Professor, Biosciences Institute, S. Paulo University, Brazil.
Her research interests are biodiversity issues related with environmental restoration and valuation, to bees and the ecosystem services provided by them, to behavioral ecology of native bees and their breeding as activity of sustainable development. Nowadays her research group also focuses the metanalyses of existing data of bees visiting flowers, considering when available the climate data.
Since 1998, has been working for the policies and programs of the Brazilian Pollinators Initiative, who proposed the International Initiative for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Pollinators, approved in COP5 in 2000. She also co-ordinates the Plan of Action of Brazilian Pollinators Initiative and the GEF proposal recently approved for this program, under FAO facilitation.
Member of the Brazilian Biosafety Commission. Advisory Member of the board of WWF-Brazil. Advisory member for taxonomy group in Species 2000 program. Vice-president of ADEMASP, an NGO related to environmental conservation in Brazil.
