Abstract:

speciesLink is an information system that integrates primary biodiversity data available at scientific collections, through the Internet in real time. The project is also developing tools to help visualize, clean, and use this data.

The prototype was developed to integrate data from twelve collections from São Paulo (4 herbaria, 3 fish, 2 mites, and 3 microbial collections) and one inventory database (SinBiota) with the Species Analyst network. In the next 2 years another 20 collections from São Paulo State are expected to be linked to the system that will be integrated to other international networks.

The project makes use of the most current advances in the following areas:
  • Communication protocols (DiGIR - Distributed Generic Information Retrieval, and SOAP - Simple Object Access Protocol)
  • Databases (using open source tools and mirroring techniques)
  • Connectivity (Internet 2)
The tools that are being developed include setting up a species distribution modeling framework (openModeller), an on-line tool to detect outliers in latitude, longitude and altitude (spOutlier), a data visualization tool, and a georeferencing tool (geoLoc).
