THOMAS F LAHR
Tom Lahr is the Deputy Chief, Biological Informatics Office, of the
Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey, Biological Resources
Discipline (BRD). He came to this position in April 1995 when the
organization was the National Biological Service. The BRD mission is to
work with others to provide the scientific understanding and
technologies needed to support the sound management and conservation of
our nation's biological resources. A fundamental part of the mission is
embodied in our deep commitment to make data and information on the
nation's biological resources more accessible to more people. Currently,
he participates in the management of the Biological Informatics Office
and the National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII)
(www.nbii.gov) program by coordinating the planning, budgeting,
development, and execution of program objectives.
Before joining the Department of the Interior, Mr. Lahr was an
Information Program Specialist for the Director of the Office of
Scientific and Technical Information at the Department of Energy (DOE).
Prior to DOE, he was International Program Manager for the NASA
Scientific and Technical Information Program. He also worked in
information systems and customer outreach positions at the Defense
Technical Information Center (DTIC) and the Nuclear Regulatory
Commission.
His professional associations include membership in the American Society
for Information Science and the Federal Executive Institute Alumni
Association. Mr. Lahr is active in the CENDI (Commerce [National
Technical Information Service], Energy [Office of Scientific and
Technical Information], National Aeronautics and Space Administration
[Scientific and Technical Information Program], National Library of
Medicine, Defense [Defense Technical Information Center and National Air
Intelligence Center], Interior [USGS-Biological Resources Division])
Federal Information Managers Group, and the International Council for
Scientific and Technical Information (ICSTI).
Mr. Lahr, a native of Geneva, New York, earned both his B.A. (History)
and M.S. (Library and Information Science) from Catholic University in
Washington, D.C. His special academic honors include membership in Pi
Gamma Mu (social science honor society) and Phi Alpha Theta (history
honor society).
