REYNALDO MORALES

Dr. Reynaldo Morales; Physicist; Science & Technology Base Programs, LANL

Dr. Morales is a physicist who received his PhD from the University of Texas in Austin. He has spent most of his professional career at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) in various capacities. He developed an experimental technique to extract equation of state data in the 5-10 Megabar region. He was also Program Manager for various weapon liaison studies. His interest in international programs of cooperation led him to develop and negotiate sister-lab agreements with the Mexican National Nuclear Institute, the Mexican Petroleum Institute, the Peruvian Institute of Nuclear Energy, and the Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority. In 1982-1984, he served in the Pentagon as Special Scientific Advisor in the Office of the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Atomic Energy where he was the principal staff person on arms control issues. In 1985-1986, he served in the U.S. State Department Foreign Service as Science Counselor in the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City. After returning to the Laboratory, he had several assignments including staff member in the Director's office and as Office Leader of University Outreach. In 1995-1996, Dr. Morales served as Foreign Affairs Specialist in the Arms Control and Disarmament Agency in Washington, DC. He was an official member of the U.S. delegation to the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty negotiations at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. In 1996-1997, he was the Program Director for Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty research and development in the office of the Assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Programs. He returned to the Laboratory in September 1997, as a staff member in the office of Quality and Planning, and has been working on strategic planning. He is a Member of the Army Science Advisory Board to the Department of the Army; the American Physical Society; the American Association for the Advancement of Science; the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE); and a founding member of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS).
