MARCIO DE MIRANDA SANTOS

Marcio de Miranda Santos, a Brazilian national, is an Agronomist, MSc in Genetics and Plant Breeding and PhD in Biochemical Genetics. He developed most of his career with the Brazilian Corporation for Agricultural Research - Embrapa, in the field of conservation and use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture-PGRFA. He was a visiting scholar at Harvard University (1995-1997), where he studied the impacts of intellectual property rights regimes on the access and ownership of plant genetic resources utilized in food production and in other agriculture production systems.

Major professional appointments include: Director General, National Center for Genetic Resources and Biotechnology (1991-1995); Head, Embrapa Department for Research and Development (1997-1999); Professor of Evolutionary Biology, Catholic University of Brasilia (2000 to 2003); Executive Director, Center for Strategic Management and Studies on Science, Technology and Innovation (2000 to date).

Dr. Santos published several papers on technical and policy issues related to agricultural biodiversity, is a member of the Brazilian Society of Genetics and a founding member of both the Research Foundation of the Federal District and the Dalmo Giacometti Foundation for Genetic Resources and Biotechnology.

He has been a consultant for FAO, Interamerican Institute for Cooperation in Agriculture, International Plant Genetic Resources Institute and national governments on policies for the conservation and use of PGRFA. Dr Santos is a former member and Chair of the IPGRI Board of Trustees (1995-2002). He has also represented Brazil in the FAO/Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture and in the UNEP/CBD Conference of the Parties (COP). Dr Santos is the current Chair of the Center of Reference on Environmental Information (CRIA) Board of Trustees.
