JACOB OPADEYI

Dr. Jacob Opadeyi holds a B.Sc. (First Class) and M.Sc. in Surveying from the University of Lagos, Nigeria and a M.Engg. (Surveying Engineering); Ph.D. (Geomatics) from the University of New Brunswick, Canada. He is a Senior Lecturer and Head, Department of Surveying and Land Information, the University of the West Indies, Trinidad. He is also the Co-ordinator of the Centre for GeoSpatial Studies at the Faculty of Engineering, UWI. He lectures in surveying, land administration and geographic information systems (GIS) at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels; and he initiated and developed the GIS programmes at the University of the West Indies.

Dr. Opadeyi has undertaken GIS research and projects in Canada, USA and the Caribbean for over the last 13 years. Two of his flagship projects are the development of State Agricultural Land Information Systems and Soils Information System for the Ministry of Agriculture, Land, and Marine Resources in Trinidad and Tobago. Dr. Opadeyi has conducted short courses in GIS throughout the Caribbean. He pioneered GIS development in several state agencies in the Caribbean. A founding member and founding president of the Geographic Information Systems Society of Trinidad and Tobago, and a member of several international professional institutions. He was awarded the 1993 International Geodyssey Award for the development of environmental GIS applications and the 1996 Cable and Wireless Fellowship in distance education. He is currently supervising several GIS research projects of postgraduate students at the University of the West Indies.
