CARLOS ALFREDO JOLY

Dr. Carlos Alfredo Joly is a Professor of Plant Ecology at the Botany Department of the Biology Institute at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP), Brazil.

He received his BSc (1976) from the State University of São Paulo/USP, Brazil, his MSc (1979) from the State University of Campinas/UNICAMP, Brazil, his PhD (1982) from the University of Saint Andrews, Scotland, UK, and Post-Doc (1993/94) from the Universitat Bern, Switzerland.

In 1995, he established the State of São Paulo Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use Program/PROBIO-SP in the State Secretary for Environment/SMA

From 1996 to 1999 he coordinated the Organizing Committee of FAPESPīs Special Research Project "Conservation and sustainable use of the biodiversity of the State of São Paulo - BIOTA/SP".

He also coordinated the project that resulted in the establishment of SinBiota (sinbiota.cria.org.br/atlas), an information system that receives data from field work carried out by projects of the Biota/Fapesp Program.

He coordinates Biota/Fapesp - The Biodiversity Virtual Institute Fapespīs research program on biodiversity conservation and sustainable use (www.biota.org.br). He is editor in chief of the electronic scientific journal of the BIOTA/FAPESP Program BIOTA NEOTROPICA (www.biotaneotropica.org.br).
