  1. Promote and support the implementation of GIS in government to enable effective and efficient management of Jamaica’s land resource.

  2. Create a cadre of GIS professionals through the development and implementation of GIS training programmes in collaboration with regional and international training institutions.

  3. Provide technical and institutional advise and guidance in the implementation and management of GIS facilities for Government Ministries and departments and Statutory bodies.

  4. Recommend, develop, implement and monitor standards, guidelines and regulations for the management, use, access and dissemination of spatial data.

  5. Represent Jamaica on international and regional bodies and technical groups on GIS, National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) and Global Spatial Data Infrastructure (GSDI)

Some programmes currently being conducted: the management of the National Geoinformatics Training Centre, the establishment of the framework for the national spatial data infrastructure, the implementation of the GIS Education in Schools Programme and the creation of a National Virtual Reference System network.
