Brief Overview of CODATA and its Recent Accomplishments

Bob Chen

CODATA is an international, interdisciplinary committee of the International Council for Science (ICSU) that seeks to improve the quality, reliability, processing, management and accessibility of data of importance to science and technology. CODATA activities range from international task groups focused on particular science data issues to an online, peer-reviewed Data Science Journal. Recent CODATA accomplishments include publication of a prominent editorial in Science on Science and the Information Society by ICSU President Jane Lubchenko and CODATA President Shuichi Iwata and a number of influential workshops held in collaboration with UNESCO, ERPANET, and the U.S. and China National Committees for CODATA. CODATA hopes to cooperate with the appropriate scientific and data management organizations in the region to improve science data access, management, and preservation throughout the Americas.
