Abstract:

The potential of impact to the environment associated with the exploration and production of hydrocarbons poses an increasing concern with the environmental quality and sensibility. To ensure new petroleum related industrial activities, preserving the environmental quality, the availability of environmental information is fundamental. This information, however, usually is not centralized and organized, facilitating its retrieval and analysis. Very few specialized environmental datacenters exist in Brazil, requiring a large effort to find and obtain standardized and quality assured environmental data. With the purpose to retrieve and organize the environmental public domain data REDEPETRO, a network of research institutes in Rio de Janeiro State, devoted to the development of studies and technical services related to the petroleum industry, proposed the creation of BAMPETRO, an environmental data bank, with the main objective to permit a rapid, secure and updated access to the information.

BAMPETRO is financed by the Brazilian funding agency FINEP, within the CTPETRO Program, using funds derived from the petroleum royalties collected from the Brazilian oil and gas production. The idea of BAMPETRO is to respond to the demands of environmental applied research required by the industry, and to help the environmental control agencies.

The concept and structure of BAMPETRO was developed to store data in different areas, including physical, chemical, biological and geological oceanography, geophysics, meteorology and socio-economy. The complexity and different nature of the data required the development of proper mechanisms of data integration among the databank and the user. The database is stored in Oracle and the data visualization and integration uses ArcGIS. All the information can be viewed and accessed through the webpage: http://www.bampetro.org/
