Walter Berendsohn: Studies of Biology at the University of Hamburg, University of the West Indies (Mona) and the Free University of
Berlin, in 1985 diploma in Biology (thesis in applied genetics). 1983 to 1986 consultant, 1987 to 1990 research director of the Jardín
Botánico La Laguna in El Salvador, C.A. 1990 doctorate from the FU Berlin (vegetation science / contrib. to the dendroflora of El
Salvador). 1990 Curator; 1991 Senior Curator at the Botanical Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem, Head, Electronic Data
Processing and Documentation; 1998 Dept. Head BDI, 2000 Director and Professor. Efforts now primarily devoted to information systems
in biodiversity research. Authored several information models. Coordinator of several EU projects or project work packages with
numerous partners, most recently the WP "Internet Platform for Cybertaxonomy" in the EU Network of Excellence EDIT. Coordinator for
federal programmes in biodiversity informatics research in Germany. Served as a delegate for the European Commission in the OECD
Megascience Working Group for Biological Informatics and now member of the German delegation to the GBIF governing board. Member of
several international boards, currently chairing the coodinators group of GBIF-Germany, the Taxonomic Databases Working Group (TDWG),
the GBIF Science Subcommittee for the Digitisation of Collections, and the CODATA Task Group on Access to Biological Collection Data.
