International Symposium: Revision of Flora Brasiliensis: challenges and opportunitiesCharles K. "Chuck" Miller, Jr.
Vice President, Information Technology and Chief Information OfficerChuck Miller heads the Information Technology division of the Missouri Botanical Garden and is responsible for both administrative computing and biodiversity informatics. He has over 25 years information technology experience and is responsible for the development and support of Tropicos, the Garden's world-leading plant information system and Botanicus, a new repository of digitized botanical reference literature from the 18th and 19th century, and other informatics systems used in support botanical research. He directs the support and administration of over 500 desktop and laptop computers and 40 servers that support Garden operations world-wide and hosts a variety of public websites including www.mobot.org, www.efloras.org, and www.tropicos.org which fields over 100 million queries per year.
He is a member of the CODATA ABCD working group, GBIF DIGIT science subcommittee and an active member of the Taxonomic Databases Working Group. He has participated in and presented to numerous international workshops and meetings on biodiversity databases, data standards and methods, digitization processes, etc. He is the local organizer of the 2006 TDWG meeting being held in St. Louis in October, 2006.
Prior to joining the Garden in 2002, Chuck held similar IT executive positions with for-profit companies and holds a Bachelor's in Physics and a Master's Degree in Business Administration.
