International Symposium: Revision of Flora Brasiliensis: challenges and opportunitiesBotanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem (BGBM, Freie Universität Berlin)
The Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem (BGBM, Freie Universität Berlin) provides a unique combination of international collaborative efforts and scientific production in both systematic research and biodiversity informatics. Apart from its traditional role in biosystematics and nomenclature (its botanical garden, herbarium and library each rank among the biggest world-wide), it is participating in national, European and global initiatives related to taxonomic information access and dissemination. and has from the beginning taken part in standardisation efforts such as those taking place under the umbrella of TDWG (IUBS Commission for Taxonomic Databases). In biodiversity informatics, the main foci are on biological collections and networking and interoperability of their data, with a series of projects starting in 1992. The BGBM is a member of the Consortium of Large-scale Taxonomic Facilities in Europe (CETAF) and participates in the German Director's Conference of Research Collections (DNFS). It serves as the botanical node in the German node system for the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).
The Department of Biodiversity Informatics and Laboratories (BDI) co-ordinates all informatics and computing activities of the BGBM. It partakes in many initiatives on the national and international level, which are aimed at the co-ordination of initiatives in biodiversity informatics, the standardization of biological information, development of information systems, and basic research in biodiversity informatics
